Employees used bake sales, raffles, a garage sale and email as some of the ways to solicit contributions from friends, family and coworkers during the campaign, which began in mid-April.
ALCOS' team members used the slogan, "Cooking Up a Cure for Cancer," and then did just that; they grilled and served hot dogs to event attendees at lunchtime on June 5.
Dennis Abood, a customer service representative in Employee Benefits, attended the event with his grandson, Jacob Davis, 6, who has been battling the disease for four years.
"When you're touched by cancer, it becomes personal," Abood said. "Can one person make a difference? I believe wholeheartedly that he can. Everybody just needs to step up to the plate and get involved."
The annual event netted $238,600 in donations, Megan Cyrulewski, Community Development Director at the American Cancer Society, said.
