BCBS of Michigan is redesigning its member ID cards to meet the BCBS Association mandates.
The purpose of the redesign is to give all Blues ID cards a similar look and feel so they are easier to use wherever they are presented. They will begin issuing the redesigned cards in phases, beginning in June 2008, with all members receiving a new card by January 1st, 2011.
How will the changes affect your group?
- Between now and January 1st, 2009, issuance of new cards may be in the new format, it may vary until full implementation.
- By January 1st, 2009, all newly issued ID cards will be in the new format.
- By January 1st, 2011, BCBSM will replace cards for all members that have not yet received a new one.
Although the cards will look different, it is important to know that the redesign will not impact your plans or benefits.
Here are some of the card changes that have been made:
- The enrollee name is listed first on the card.
- The contract number is now referred to as the enrollee ID.
- The group number and plan code have been removed from the card to ensure the card remains a “key” to eligibility, rather than the source. Providers will still be able to view this information on the current systems in place which are used to determine eligibility and process and pay claims.
- A magnetic stripe was added to the back of the card. It currently contains the issuer ID number, contract number with alpha prefix as well as the subrscriber’s name and date of birth.
- Phone numbers are now located on the right-hand side of the back of the card.
The addition of the magnetic stripe will allow BCBS to implement future initiatives, such as those to make the billing process more efficient by giving health care providers easier access to eligibility and benefit information.
Groups that have Blue Care Network will see the rollout of the redesigned cards start in November, 2008. At this time they are not removing the group number from the BCN ID cards, although BCN is studying the possibility of removing the number for the January 1st, 2011 effective date.
